december in Alexander Park

december in Alexander Park

the message read
‘mt me @ the bndstd – now!’

I leave the warmth
enter the chilly air

flashes of blue sky
– so welcome

shoulders hunched
stiff like a scarecrow

my bones shudder
skin tightens

reach the bandstand
no-one there – silence

stare into the pines
then a flash of gold

a high-pitched call
then another and another

finally, five tiny goldcrests
sharing my winter
