Group meetings
Fire River Poets meet on a Wednesday evening from 7.30pm to 9.45 pm once or twice a month, hosted by Derek Power – one of our long standing members. A contribution of £2 is requested (£1 to the host and £1 towards Fire River funds).
Members read one of their own poems aloud, providing copies for members and a group discussion follows. The aim is to provide thoughtful, positive criticism in a supportive setting that is an honest appraisal, but also offers encouragement.
There is also an option to bring along a poem by a favourite or established poet for discussion.
Every fifth session one of the members devises and runs a workshop. The poems that result are read out at the end of the evening and sometimes worked on afterwards and brought back at a later date.
We also recommend books, poets, events and competitions that may be relevant to the group. Leaflets, magazines and competition flyers are always on offer.
In the summer months, we usually take a long walk in the surrounding countryside as a group and use the occasion to write about the experience.
Poetry Readings at the Brewhouse Theatre
We have set up a programme of regular poetry readings and Poetry Cafes at the Brewhouse Theatre in Taunton which run throughout the year. Up-and-coming and more established poets are invited to give readings and there are open-mic slots for interested poets. Fire River Poets can be heard regularly at these events which are hosted by our chairperson John Stuart.
Readings and workshops
Members of the group are also available to give readings or run poetry workshops at other venues in the wider community.
Commissions
It has been known for some of us to accept commissions for poems on a particular theme for special occasions; let us know, and we will do our best to supply something suitable.
Contact John Stuart for further details about any of the above.
